Several years ago, when I really embraced the idea that perhaps I could put pen to paper and make magic happen, I got it in my mind that one of the things I wanted to write was role playing games. I wanted to help spur the imagination of gamers, and I wanted to help facilitate some of the amazing experiences I’ve had through RPGs. I dismissed the idea fairly quickly for a number of reasons–girls don’t write gaming books, I’d never be able to make those words work, I don’t know where to start. Even so, it’s always been in the back of my mind. I should do this. I could make this work.
Several months ago, I made a comment on someone’s facebook post that I would love to be able to write gaming books. That this was something I wanted to do at some point in my life.
This started me on a new path that I didn’t think I would have the opportunity to walk. There were long conversations, lengthy internal debates, and no small amount of anxiety over my abilities. I worked through it–with a significant amount of help from people around me.
Thanks to excellent mentors, a supportive husband, and a wonderful tribe that is always there to bolster me, I am going to have the chance to try something new and exciting. I get to work with By Night Studios on their Apocalypse project. As of now, I’m in an extended try-out stage, while we see if my writing and my abilities will mesh with the team and with the needs of the company.
To say that I’m excited about this opportunity would be a gross understatement. I have the chance to work with a talented team of people that I respect, and the opportunity to affect something that I hold dear to my heart. The things I’ve already learned on this journey will carry me forward and serve to enhance my career in the future.
So there you have it! That’s the big news I mentioned the other day. I’m nervous and excited, and I can’t wait to see what I can accomplish now.
